About Nuclear Weapons

The first nuclear weapon, the atomic bomb, was invented by the United States during World War Two. Only two nuclear weapons have ever been used in war. One bomb destroyed the city of Hiroshima, Japan, on 6 August 1945 and a second destroyed the city of Nagasaki, Japan, on 9 August 1945. Over 200,000 people died and thousands more were injured.

A nuclear weapon possesses enormous explosive force which also releases tremendous heat and radioactive materials. These radioactive materials can make people very ill long after the explosion.

Nuclear weapons are the most destructive weapons on earth. A single bomb has the potential to destroy an entire city, kill millions and contaminate air, land and water for many kilometres around the original blast site.

Embrace! A World Free of Nuclear Weapons

There are currently nine countries which have a combined total of 25,000 nuclear weapons. Five thousand of these weapons are deployed and some are on hair-trigger alert.

Our dream for a world free of nuclear weapons is one filled with peace and hope, a world without war, without fear. What’s your dream?
